| Secrets for Shine-Free SkinPosted Friday, June 17, 2011 by NewBeauty Staff Dealing with persistently oily skin can be a nuisance. These insider tips can help keep your skin shine-free. • Mattifying lotions and anti-shine powders and gels can keep skin less oily, but they only address surface oil and don’t reach far enough into the skin to work directly on the sebaceous glands. • The most effective way of keeping oil production under control is with betahydroxy acids, like salicylic acid, and oral doses of vitamin A, which slow down activity in the oil glands. “Vitamin A, also known as isotretinoin, cuts oil by decreasing the size of the oil gland,” says Miami dermatologist Janice Lima-Maribona, MD. • The worst thing to do to an oily complexion is over dry it, which forces the skin to make more oil to compensate what it’s lacking. • Some doctors are injecting the pores with Botox to temporarily decrease oil production. • As of now, there’s no proven way to permanently reduce oil production or shrink the size of the sebaceous glands although antioxidants can help prevent oxidation of the skin and its cells. | Are You Neglecting Your Neck? Posted Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by Liz Ritter, Managing Editor
Celebrity aesthetician Renée Rouleau has a theory: American women are missing out on a huge anti-aging skin-care component—caring for their necks. “From my travels to France to research skin-care treatments, I discovered how French women are so diligent about extending all their skin-care treatments on to the neck and décolleté area,” she says. So what’s a neck neglector to do?
Treat the neck like the face because it also "gets skin discoloration and loses tone,” explains Rouleau. Generally moisturizers, sunscreen and scrubs should be used on this area such as a gentle facial scrub formulated with perfectly round beads. If you want to use an acid serum, do a patch test to ensure compatibility as the skin on the neck can be more sensitive than facial skin.
Apply SPF moisturizer to the entire face and neck all year, rain or shine. According to Rouleau, carrying the remnants of a facial sunscreen application down to the neck isn’t enough. “You really must apply sunscreen in two full applications to ensure proper protection.”
Do you read in bed at night? The position of your body may be causing unnecessary wrinkles on your neck. The deep lines that go horizontally across the front of your neck are caused from creasing the skin while looking down, and as well as sleeping on your back at night. “Lessen wrinkles while you are awake—prop yourself up as straight as possible when reading,” Rouleau says. | |

| Healthy Skin: The Shocking Skin-Cancer Fighter You've Never ConsideredRead More [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]We're all doing our best to keep our skin healthy these days and skin-cancer free (hello SPF!), but experts have stumbled upon a shocking discovery about something that may fight skin cancer that most people don't know about... An aspirin a day may keep melanoma at bay? That's the latest news from researchers at Harvard, who say that in their study of 1,000 people, the risk of melanoma was slashed by nearly 50 percent for people who popped an aspirin daily for at least five years."Our data at least support the hypothesis that long-term steady aspirin use has an effect," said study co-author Dr. Robert Stern, a professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School and chief of dermatology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. It's not entirely clear how or why aspirin may protect you, but some theories note that aspirin may negatively affect the development of melanoma cells. Yes, aspirin isn't a magic bullet. Still wear your SPF, and yes, it may not be smart for people who have stomach issues, but I say this news is worth chatting with your doctor about. (And, remember the findings about aspirin slashing your risk for breast cancer?) Fascinating right? P.S. New skin cancer warnings for when you're behind the wheel. And, why it's important to protect your skin at the office (yes, indoors!)... Read More [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien] | |
